(ca. early 16th century-1587)
   dancer, ballet master, choreographer
Born Badassarino di Belgioioso in Piedmont, Italy, Balthazar de Beaujoyeux, as he was known in France, was at first a violinist-composer and organizer of festivals for the courts of Mary Stuart, Charles IX, Henry III, then Catherine de' Medici.
For the latter, he composed La Défense du paradis, a work of political allusions representing the four days preceding the Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre. Balthazar de Beaujoyeux is also the author of the celebrated Ballet comique de la reine (1581), considered to be the first court ballet of genuine dramatic nature.
